Why I Write – More about Leigh

My mom says I am the family writer… that I have a gift with the written word. But hey, she’s my mom.

I tend to think out loud, and writing helps me to process my thoughts and my emotions without blathering to whoever will listen. When I write, I can edit myself – something I am not naturally gifted at.

I found an old journal a few years back and as I read it, I thought, “Man, what a whiner. Was I really that sad and depressed?!” Talk about a pity party. The thought of someone finding that after I was dead and buried, that that would be what I left behind, was quite appalling to me.

So I made a decision… I needed to be more positive, even inside my own head. I truly believe that what you think about affects how you feel, which affects your actions. If I wanted to live a happier, more fulfilling life, I’d better end the pity party and start focusing on the brighter side of life. So, I pay attention to the lyrics of the music I listen to, what I read, what TV I watch… And what I write.

Putting it here – I think – makes me more accountable to try to really be like the things I write. (Even if my mom is the only one who ever subscribes to this blog.)

I write about what I want to be. How I want to act. How I wish I could seem to others. Maybe one day I’ll get it right. But until I do, I’ll just keep swimming in that direction…
